TCRF has a very clear policy on AI: If AI was used at any point during your reverse engineering process, you may not contribute to their wiki. This seems to include any kind of AI usage, which means all information in this book and the associated repo is effectively poisoned. Their wiki page on HP3-GBA containing calls for contribution, missing information or straight-up errors does not change this.

This book holds some information on Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban for the GameBoy Advance. Most of it was derived through decompilation or dynamic analysis. It is my hope that this serves as an interesting “Wiki” of sorts for ROM-hacking, speedrunning or just general playthroughs.

You can find a work-in-progress decompilation in the associated repo. With some tinkering, you can create basic ROM-hacks as well, including translations, assets swaps or general code modifications.

Player Stats

This page shows the level-up table for the 3 playable characters. Note that this does not include an attack stat, which is calculated based on level and spell stats.

In general:

Exp., Acc., Def% and MDef% are the same between characters
Harry: low SP, low MP, medium speed
Hermione: low SP, high MP, best speed
Ron: high SP, low MP, worst speed

Lvl: The player’s stats at this level
SP: The player’s maximum stamina points
MP: The player’s maximum magic points
Exp.: The additional experience required to reach the next level.
Speed: The inverse of the player’s speed. Higher means later turn order.
Acc.: The player’s default accuracy, where >= 100 means it should always hit.
Def%: The likelihood to dodge a standard attack
MDef%: The likelyhood to dodge a special attack

Game Modes

The game uses a global “Game Mode” variable to indicate in which type of screen you are. Screens include the main menu, the startup sequence, walking around on the overworld, watching a cutscene, navigating a debug menu, etc. These game modes can take up to 3 arguments and have 5 mode-specific variables.

Each game mode has an init, update and destroy function. These live in a table at 0x08065CBC/0x08065C48 (US/JP). The update function is called on each game frame (at ~30fps). When switching between game modes, first the destroy function of the current game mode is called, then the init function of the new game mode.

The game mode data is defined like so:

This struct lives at 3 positions (US/JP):

0x03003EF4/0x03003F54: Current game mode
0x03003F18/0x03003F78: Next/pending game mode
0x03003F3C/0x03003F9C: Previous game mode

To initiate a game mode transition, overwrite dwCurrentGameMode of the pending game mode object with the new game mode id, ORed with 0x80. For example, to enter the debug menu, set it to 0x99. For a proper transition, also fill in the arguments and zero out dwModeState, dwModeTimer and any unused arguments.

(roomId, variantId, kindId): Standard/random encounter, indexes into random encounter table as table[room][kind][variant]
(encounterId, unused, 0xFF): Scripted encounter
